First Church History
Our church history is a very rich one that began in 1933. It all started with a home prayer meeting that met weekly with the founding pastor Reverend W. Crawford Jones, and a small group of dedicated Believers who shared a common vision of starting a church. On Christmas Eve of 1933, Calvary Gospel Chapel would have its first official service at a rented church building on the corner of Green Street and South Jefferson Street. In 1939, the independent church affiliated with Open Bible Standard Churches, a Pentecostal association of churches with headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1945, the church was able to purchase the building that they had previously been renting and they also voted to change their name from Calvary Gospel Chapel, to Dayton First Church of the Open Bible. In 1964, First Church purchased 16 acres on Old Troy Pike in what is now the City of Riverside, and built our current facilities with the first service being held in 1967. Many lives have been won for Christ since the first service in 1933.
